Other activities: Addenbrooke’s, Cambridge University Hospitals is the Major Trauma Centre (MTC) for the East of England. Serving a population of approximately 6 million people over the six counties, The MTC is one of the largest in the UK with approximately 1500 new trauma patients every year. This patient group includes every age group, every specialty and every body region. In 2021 we treated over 900 ISS >15 patients. The Orthopaedic Trauma Unit (OTU) is made up of 6 consultant orthopaedic trauma surgeons, 2 senior post CCT fellows, several major trauma specialist nurses and physiotherapists who care for the complex trauma patients. We run a daily consultant delivered service. There are 3 trauma operating theatres running each day. There is a weekly complex trauma MDT where all inpatient cases are discussed. The department has a further 25 orthopaedic consultants, 3 orthogeriatric consultants, 5 MSK radiologists and 2 infectious diseases consultants. Successful fellows are invited to tailor the fellowship to their personal needs. Pelvic and Acetabular: Fellows will be exposed to complex decision making, surgical fixation including open surgery, percutaneous fixation, acetabular reconstruction and complex replacement in he setting of acute pelvic trauma. Foot and ankle: Mr Mike Barrett founded orthohub.xyz and is a leader in orthopaedic education. He treats a large number of complex foot and ankle trauma, he also performed reconstructive surgery for post traumatic and routine conditions. Shoulder & elbow: Fellows will gain experience in the management of complex upper limb injuries. Mr Graham Tytherleigh Strong is world renowned for his work on the Sternoclavicular joint. Mr Van Rensburg is the chairman of the AO shoulder and Elbow masters course, he has a particular interest in elbow injuries. Mr Kang is a passionate trainer and educator. Limb Reconstruction: We see and treat a large number of grade 3b open tibia injuries. Fellows will have exposure to fine wire treatment of severe trauma, bone transport and deformity correction. Hand & Wrist:There are 2 orthopaedic consultant hand and wrist surgeons who treat the complex injuries. They work closely with the plastic and reconstructive surgeons. Fellows have the opportunity to spend time within this team. Spines – there are two orthopaedic spinal surgery consultants, and many more neurosurgical consultants. Visiting fellows can spend time with these colleagues should they wish to do so. There is a large volume of spinal trauma, and spinal fixation is performed at all levels.
